DRI’s Office of External Affairs and Communications connects the Institute’s diverse range of storytelling experts under a single mission: to work together to enhance DRI’s reputation as a globally respected research institution, creating passionate and loyal advocates for DRI.

As a key member of this team, the Visual Communication Specialist will be responsible for designing and creating a wide variety of visual communication (e.g. - graphics, illustrations, photographs, videos, and promotional materials) that tell DRI’s story and support the outreach and project needs of research faculty, students, and support staff.

Reporting to the Communications Manager, this position will serve as the Institute’s primary graphic designer and multimedia editor, working to translate complex scientific concepts into compelling visuals and helping to distribute that content to internal and external audiences. This position will also provide general training to faculty and staff on how to shoot video and build effective visual communications.

The Visual Communication Specialist position can be located at either the DRI Reno or DRI Las Vegas campus with the preference being in Reno.


Starting salary is commensurate with experience and education. DRI offers a benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, and life insurance; including 15.50% retirement match, 24 annual leave days, beginning balance of 30 sick leave days, 11 paid holidays, educational benefits, and the choice of three health insurance plans that can be supplemented with flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts. Additionally, there is no state income tax and no social security deduction. This position is eligible for relocation assistance.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a graphic design, illustration, or communication studies related discipline (e.g., journalism, web design, digital media, photography, video production)
  • Minimum 2-3 years of professional experience and demonstrated proficiency creating graphics, illustrations, photographs, shooting and editing videos, and print materials utilizing Adobe Creative Suite (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere).
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of applications. (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex, highly creative projects on tight deadlines. 
  • Exceptional team player with strong interpersonal skills, including active listening skills and ability to provide advanced design advice and consultation to research faculty on all aspects of visual communications.
  • Ability to work independently, manage, prioritize, and complete multiple projects and tasks in an efficient and timely manner under minimal supervision.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.  
  • Experience with HTML and CSS.

Preferred Qualifications

Greater consideration will be given to those who possess these skills and attributes:

  • Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) certification
  • Experience in 3D modeling, animation and data visualization software and technique
  • Experience engaging with scientists, academic faculty, and/or technical experts of all career levels.
  • Strong interest in science communications and knowledge of visual communication best practices, tactics, and ethics.
  • Knowledge of Google Analytics.
  • Knowledge of web accessibility standards and best practices, website usability principles, and digital content accuracy and accessibility standards.
  • Knowledge of WordPress and SharePoint, and ability to handle web maintenance and updates as a back up to Web and Digital Engagement Administrator.

Conditions of Employment

  • Employment is contingent upon a successful completion of a background check.
  • This position requires the ability to perform physical tasks of occasionally lifting 25 lbs., moving, lifting, or packing items. Sitting for long periods and periodic stooping and bending.
  • This position may infrequently be required to travel to off-site research locations for photography and/or videography to tell DRI stories and support DRI special events and conferences. Occasional travel between DRI’s Las Vegas and Reno campuses.
