Executive Director of Public Affairs and Communications

Reed College, one of the nation’s premier liberal arts institutions, seeks an experienced, strategic and creative professional to develop further and implement a comprehensive public relations and marketing communications plan for the college. The Executive Director of Public Affairs and Communications will work with college leadership, faculty and staff to identify, define and communicate the college’s distinctive qualities and maintain and enhance the college’s reputation among its most important constituencies and the public. The mission of Public Affairs and Communications includes positioning the college as a thoughtful and credible voice on broad societal issues and higher education. 

The Executive Director will manage the college’s crisis communications and media relations, its web presence, creative services, social media, internal communications, community and government relations, major events and presidential communications.

The Executive Director will be a member of the President’s senior staff and provide public relations counsel to the president and college leadership on a wide range of issues confronting the college and requiring management and response. The Executive Director will manage a staff of 17 and will oversee strategies and programs that engage the college’s key constituencies, including prospective students, families, alumni, donors and supporters, faculty, staff, students, government officials and the news media.

Under the leadership of the Executive Director, the Public Affairs and Communications team plays an important role in major outreach functions of the college, including:

  • Developing and implementing a marketing communications plan that will attract high-caliber students in collaboration with the Office of Admission and Financial Aid.
  • In coordination with the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, building engagement and support among Reed alumni, families and friends, including writing and production of Reed Magazine, published quarterly.
  • Enhancing understanding of Reed’s contributions and strengthening the college’s reputation as a purposeful, creative and intellectual community.
  • Together with the Office of Institutional Diversity, advancing and promoting the college’s efforts to strengthen Reed’s growing and demonstrated commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion.

 The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the synergy of communications channels and the ability to maximize the impact of content across those channels. The candidate will have exceptional written and verbal communications skills and in-depth knowledge of how technology can be used to communicate efficiently and effectively.



Requirements

The Executive Director of Public Affairs and Communications will:

  • Report to the Vice President for College Relations and Planning and serve as a member of the President’s senior staff
  • Develop and implement a strategic communications plan that addresses the college’s most important constituencies.
  • As requested by the President and Vice President for College Relations, engage with the college’s Board of Trustees to provide updates on communications strategies and issues.
  • Provide public relations counsel on issues confronting the college. Lead issues management by monitoring and identifying issues and problems early and enabling college leadership to address them effectively.
  • Address the diverse communications needs and concerns of the college community and implement an inclusive internal communications program that promotes the ethos of the campus and keeps faculty, staff and students well informed and engaged in the life of the college.
  • Develop, define and communicate, with the involvement and support of the college community, the college’s institutional identity and its distinctive qualities to increase public understanding of Reed’s value and importance.
  • Using the college’s identity and distinctive qualities, develop and implement a marketing communications plan in support of the Office of Admissions.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Development to foster engagement among Reed’s alumni, families and friends, foundations and other philanthropic organizations
  • Manage the college’s web presence and work closely with academic and administrative units to help them meet their user needs and support Reed’s credibility, value and importance.
  • Oversee the college’s social media activity, ensuring the college’s key messages are communicated and identifying issues that may require the college’s response.
  • Manage Reed’s media relations program, ensuring the college’s most compelling stories reach public media channels and that the college is viewed as a trusted and credible resource for reporters, writers and editors.
  • Manage the college’s local, state and federal government relations programs and participate in a wide range of community relations programs active throughout the college
  • Elevate Reed’s reputation in Portland, serving as an ambassador for the college and building relationships with organizations, elected officials, media, influencers and neighborhood leaders in the Portland community.
  • Supervise the Office of Conference and Event Planning, providing budget and management oversight of the professionals involved in developing and producing high-quality events, including commencement, departmental functions, community concerts and a revenue-producing summer conference program.
  • Develop the appropriate organization to meet the public relations and marketing communication needs of the college, establishing a plan, priorities and initiatives that ensure resources are used to address the college’s most important communications issues and opportunities.
  • Provide thoughtful management to the professional staff under supervision, as well as training and other resources to college faculty engaged in external and internal communications.
  • Develop metrics and measurements that will ensure effective evaluation of the organization’s programs and projects.
