About IIM Bangalore

A 100-acre oasis in south Bangalore, the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB), with its all-stone architecture, lush verdant woods and landscaped gardens, provides an idyllic environment to engage in management studies, academics and learning. IIMB has world-class infrastructure that facilitates excellence in teaching, research, consulting and other professional activities.

Located in India’s high technology capital, IIMB is in close proximity to some of the leading corporate houses in the country, ranging from information technology to consumer product companies, giving it the added advantage of integrating classroom knowledge with practical experience.

Established in 1973, the Institute has since then built on its base of highly accomplished faculty, world-class infrastructure and motivated student body to emerge as one of the premier institutes for management education and research, promoting managerial excellence in the country. IIMB strives to achieve excellence through partnerships with industry, and leading academic institutions, the world over. IIMB’s vision is to be a global, renowned academic institution, fostering excellence in management, innovation, and entrepreneurship for business, government and society. IIMB’s mission: ‘’We nurture leaders and entrepreneurs by imparting holistic, and innovative education that is transformative. We create impact through thought leadership.’’

The long-duration post graduate programmes of the Institute comprise the Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP); the Post Graduate Programme in Enterprise Management (PGPEM); the Post Graduate Programme in Public Policy and Management (PGPPM); the one year full-time Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP), and the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM), which is a doctoral programme. All these programmes are very highly rated and IIMB alumni occupy senior managerial and academic positions around the world.

Our efforts for strengthening our research and teaching have paid handsome dividends by enhancing our international reputation. Our PGP, Executive PGP and Executive Education Programmes are all very highly placed in global rankings by the Financial Times, UK; QS World University Rankings, USA; and Eduniversal, Paris.

IIMB was re-accredited by the EFMD Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) for a further period of five years in 2016. The five-year accreditation, highest that EQUIS confers, is a testimony to the fact that the evaluating team was confident about IIMB’s ability to sustain its efforts undertaken to achieve excellent standards in education, internationalization and research. EQUIS is a global school accreditation system run by the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) that specializes in higher education institutions of management and business administration. The fundamental objective of EQUIS, linked to the mission of EFMD, is to raise the standard of management education worldwide.

In 2018, IIMB has been ranked in the top 25 globally in the QS World University Ranking, for Masters in Management. IIMB’s Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP) is ranked among the Top 35 by the Financial Times Global MBA Rankings 2018. IIMB is ranked No 2 in the NIRF 2018 List of Management schools in India by the Ministry of Human Resources Development. In 2017, IIMB has been ranked in the top 5 in Asia-Pacific and top 30 globally in the Financial Times Masters in Management Rankings. In 2017, IIMB is ranked the best business school in Central Asia by Eduniversal, Paris. IIMB has always been a hub of innovative activity and is always on the lookout for opportunities to collaborate with the industry as well as other academic institutions the world over. The N.S. Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning is a catalyst for entrepreneurial activity and a well-known incubation centre for early start-up ventures.

A feature that sets apart IIMB from other B-schools is the carefully selected mix of students so that students can leverage from each other’s experience in addition to theoretical studies in the classroom, thereby creating a truly enriching learning experience.

IIMB also has a large Student Exchange Programme with several partner universities across North America, Europe and Australia. As the global business scenario gets increasingly complex and dynamic, IIMB prepares students to manage and lead in such dynamic business situations by providing a diverse and challenging environment where they can learn, grow and emerge, ready to lead and inspire.

School History

History of IIM Bangalore

Two institutes of management were started by the Government of India - one in Ahmedabad and another in Calcutta. The Government of Karnataka was keen that a similar institution should be started in Bangalore.

The first two Institutes were based on models in the US and fulfilled the need for trained managers, mainly in the private sector. Persons trained in IIMA and IIMC could not, for various reasons, be taken into the public sector institutions. One of the main reasons was the low scale of remuneration in the public sector, compared with the private sector, especially in multinational organizations. This, even though at one time, the public sector was to be in the commanding heights of the economy. A number of public sector institutions were started and large investments made both by the central and state governments, respectively.

It was, therefore, felt that the institute to be set up in Bangalore should be developed in such a manner as to prepare competent persons for fulfilling the needs of the public sector. The institutions that were kept in mind were bodies like electricity boards, water supply boards and HMT, ITI, BEML, road transport, corporations, municipal corporations, and the like. Considerable investments had been made in such sectors too and they also wanted competent people to manage the affairs.

So, the idea was to offer management courses in the proposed Institute at Bangalore to bright young people, who were expected to occupy important managerial positions in the public sector. The matter was discussed in various ad hoc committees, constituted by the state government, and it was taken up with the Government of India.

For the proposed Bangalore institute, the Government of Karnataka offered 100 acres of land free of cost and a contribution to the corpus of Rs. 30 lakhs. Discussions were held with Dr. L S Chandrakanth, and Mr Ravi Mathai.

Mr T A Pai agreed to be the first chairman. N S Ramaswamy, who was then director of NITIE, was appointed the first director. Considerable preliminary work was done, and the new institute was inaugurated by Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister, on 28 October, 1973.

The institute was started in St. Joseph's College of Commerce, and some other buildings, which were rented. A number of difficulties were encountered, but were fairly well-handled. The most important difficulty faced was the reluctance of public sector institutions to appoint the graduates who emerged from the IIMB despite their orientation towards the public sector.

The land offered by the state government was selected on Bannerghatta Road in Bangalore.

Stein, Doshi and Bhalla were appointed as architects and very good plans were prepared.

Mr N S Ramaswamy as the first director did considerable work for the organization of the institute. Professor Philip handled some other problems like labour discipline and related matters. Dr K R S Murthy succeeded Professor Philip. He worked during the period 1992 to 1997 and has been mainly responsible for building an institute of excellence. It has been a steady tale of considerable achievement.

By 1991, the ideas of development also changed in the country, and liberalization and globalisation were accepted as the need of the hour, which had its own effect on the manner in which the IIMB has functioned over the past 7-8 years. This cannot be considered a deflection from the original intention. It is an organic change brought about by the situation, which if anything, shows the institute's maturity to adapt to the demands of the times.

The campus has developed well. A large number of trees have been planted and a pleasant atmosphere created. The library is very well planned. The classrooms and the dormitories all conform to the master plan.

An IIMB product is bound to be good material, trained well, with the basics of good citizenship nailed in place. This is very much in keeping with the aim of the institution: To be a centre of excellence, select the best, turn out first-rate professionals and responsible citizens and expect them to function well.
