School Overview

Southeast Missouri State University was founded in 1873 and has evolved into a comprehensive state University of nine colleges and schools offering more than 150 academic programs. Southeast is located on the Mississippi River in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Interstate 55 links Cape with St. Louis, Missouri (2 hours to the north) and with Memphis, Tennessee (3 hours to the south). More than 10,000 students attend Southeast with a student-faculty ratio of 17 to 1. The University’s main campus of over 300 acres includes Academic Hall, a 100-year-old landmark building. A 400-acre site on Interstate 55 north of Cape Girardeau is presently under development as a mixed-use “technology village.” The School of Visual and Performing Arts is housed in the new “River Campus, a 17-acre site in the historic downtown area. In addition, the University has regional campuses in southeast Missouri.
